We are grateful that you’ve chosen the Basilica for your child’s Baptism. As Jesus healed the paralytic (Mark 2:5), so too will your child be born anew (John 3:5).

Q. How old can the child be? A. From infant to five years of age. If the child is older than five years, and you are not a registered member of the Basilica parish, you will need to contact your local parish and register your child in their religious education program.

Q. Who can be a godparent? A. Canon Law requires only one godparent, who must be a practicing Catholic and active in their parish.

To be a practicing and active Catholic means:

If there are to be 2 Godparents, one must be male, and the other must be female. If one of the godparents is not Catholic, but is a baptized Christian, they may serve as a Christian witness to the baptism along with the Catholic godparent. Note: the parents of the baby to be baptized may not serve as godparents. Also, it is not permitted to have more than 2 godparents.

Q. Do the godparents need to fill out any paperwork in order to officially serve as godparents?

A. Yes! They must have this form filled out by the pastor of their parish. It must be sealed with the parish seal and mailed to us 1 month prior to the baptism at:

Q. When can I register for the preparation class? A. After we receive and review your completed baptism registration form, you will be contacted by the parish office. Basilica Baptismal Preparation classes are held on the 1st Sunday of each month by appointment only. Call our Office Manager at us 410-547-5523. Both parents and godparents MUST attend a preparation class.

Q. After I complete the required paperwork and attend the class, what happens next? A. Unless you have arranged for an alternate date, baptisms will take place on the 2nd Sunday of each month following the 10:45 AM Mass. You will need to confirm that your child is scheduled for an agreed upon baptism date and time before making arrangements.

Q. How much does it cost? A. There is no fee for a sacrament. However, the parish depends on your generosity. A donation is always greatly appreciated. $50-100 is a typical donation

Tattoo and permanent makeup removal specialist Lorena Öberg describes her method for removing permanent makeup tattoos

Ever since I started performing permanent makeup tattoo treatments, I have noticed its growth in popularity. 1,2 Google Trends exemplifies this growth, where interest in the term ‘eyebrow tattoo’ has steadily increased over the past five years. 3

Ever since I started performing permanent makeup tattoo treatments, I have noticed its growth in popularity.

However, in my experience, coinciding with this growth is the number of patients requiring removal. Traditionally, patients have requested removal because they feel the makeup no longer suits their more mature look. However, I am increasingly seeing people who have received bad permanent makeup treatment and have been disfigured by untrained technicians.

Currently, Level 5 training is recommended by Health Education England (HEE) for tattoo removal using lasers, 4 although an individual does not need any qualifications to perform the actual permanent makeup treatment.

However, permanent makeup is a difficult skill to learn, so even if one has training, it does not mean that they can do the treatment well.

For medical aesthetic clinics currently performing tattoo removal, or if they are interested in doing so, they should also consider incorporating permanent makeup removal.

There are three ways to reduce or ‘lighten’ pigment molecules from the skin: topical, non-laser solutions applied with a tattoo gun, and laser. All three of these methods have a place in your practice and can be considered for different circumstances, as discussed below.

1. Topical

There are many lotions that are being sold as ‘tattoo removal creams’, but I have not come across any clinical studies showing their effectiveness without combining laser. I have personally found them ineffective because they cannot penetrate into the dermis to reach the tattoo ink. 5-7

One guinea pig model study demonstrated a reduction in tattoo pigment using imiquimod and tretinoin after 28 days, however application started six hours after tattooing, which is not very reflective of real-life scenarios. 8

Prior to laser treatments, I have found that there are alternative topical methods that can help to assist with the removal of pigment. If a permanent makeup tattoo is under six months old, I use a simple technique of applying fine sea salt to the area and gently exfoliating twice-per-day for two months, which draws out the ink. I have found this can cut the number of required laser treatments in half, but it’s only effective with new tattoos as after around six months the ink settles.

HL 58 (Italy, thirteenth century)

The fourth leaf should be a small two-column Bible leaf from HL 54 . According to the label on the matte, that manuscript is a “Dominican Manuscript written in Paris” in the unrealistically-precise year 1240 AD. In the present set, this was replaced with a leaf from , another small-format thirteenth-century Bible which Ege dated to the equally absurdly-precise year 1250 AD.* The date on the label has been edited accordingly:

* On pp. 119 and 137 of Otto Ege’s Manuscripts , Gwara notes that in a different portfolio, “Original Leaves from Famous Books: Eight Centuries,” leaves of HL 54 are sometimes replaced by leaves of HL 9. The present set appears to be the only recorded example of the same substitution taking place in “Original Leaves from Famous Bibles, Nine Centuries,” but many examples of this portfolio have yet to be carefully catalogued and identified using Gwara’s handlist numbers. In the early 1990s, I was a graduate student at Yale working on a PhD in Medieval Studies. My dissertation focused on a fragmentology project, although that word would not be coined for decades. Seventeen leaves from a twelfth-century antiphonal from the Austrian Benedictine abbey of Lambach (on the Danube about halfway between Salzburg and Vienna) had made their way to Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and for my thesis I reconstructed the manuscript as much as possible – adding to the seventeen Yale leaves four leaves still in Lambach, two in the abbey of St-Paul-im-Lavanttal, another that was hanging on the wall of an alpine resort in Badgastein, two at Fereshte Womens Fashion Simple Block Heel Zipper Knight Boots Red M7b9mFji
, and one at the St. Louis Public Library (I’ve blogged about that one ) – and studied the cumulative liturgy, music, and decoration of the manuscript in the context of the twelfth-century Lambach scriptorium. The manuscript is known as the Gottschalk Antiphonary (or Antiphonal), after the scribe/artist Gottschalk of Lambach who was primarily responsible for its creation.
